They Come And They Go

A quick look at the top selling toys of all time, with special thanks to Esquire magazine.

Thanksgiving is many things to many people, but it has also become the kickoff for the Christmas selling season, and what says Christmas better than toy sales? While boomers can remember many different toys we had (let’s face it, we did get bought off with toys to keep us quiet) we also inherited things from our parents and have had to suffer through some of the weird stuff that came after us.

Who here can remember a son or daughter trying to convince you that their life would be over if you didn’t cough up extra money for Pogs, weird little cardboard milk bottle caps? Or scouring every store you could find looking for a Cabbage Patch doll, or hearing that the GameBoy was the one surefire way for them to get better grades in school? Uh huh…

So, as we are about to kick off the seasonal feeding frenzy with a Thanksgiving feast, here are the top selling toys of the past eighty years. Some you will recognize, some you will cringe at seeing again, some will evoke fond memories. All of them will give you an interesting picture of what our culture and society is about, at least through the eyes of a kid who is somewhere between the ages of eight and eighty!

Happy Thanksgiving!
